I did not post updates for a few days but I will comment on this past weekend with positive events in my life.
Nona has decided to put her house on Arrow Lakes Drive in Castlegar, B.C., on the market as she is considering downsizing. With this decision, she needs assistance to to bring the house into order. With my limited capabilities at my age I was directed to deposing the remnants of stair demolition, tree removal and various materials that could be safely incinerated on her property.
I started this assignment on Friday, February 21, 2025 and completed same, successfully the next day.
This prompted roasting potatoes, garlic and smokies. The fringe benefits in some of these volunteer efforts are very satisfying for this great grandfather.
Watching the USA / Canada World Hockey Game on Thursday, February 20, 2025 was indeed the best hockey in recent years. Imagine, only one penalty called and that went to the American representative. Thank you to our Canadian players for their professional discipline. The victory was Canadian and resonated throughout Canada.
My puzzle hobby continued with a 1,000 piece farm scene. It became a challenge as the three pigs in the scene were red in the shaded portions. Yes, I am color blind with reds and greens being my deficiency. The struggles were therapeutic and absorbing. My patience was challenged. Yesterday the usual one piece “was found” by Marilyn as she was delighted to insert the final piece.
Watching the Scotties quarter and final game was enjoyable. The Einarson Rink had a few shots where they “choked” but the Homan Rink should represent Canada well in the World’s competition.
Our friend Jim Laktin joined us for the Scotties final. He was able to apprise us of the competition in the eggs markets these days with the Bird Flu threats. Very interesting!. We also hear about hos son, Jamie, successful opening his Biggest Little Fruit Stand in its new location along the Highway at Tarrys.
I had coffee at A & W with some former Rotarian friends Ron Armbruster and Brian Brady. We meet weekly at 1000 hours every Wednesday. It is relaxing to chat with Rotarians because they believe in “Service Above Self”, so we have a common understanding.
I am on the Subdivision completion stage of the small project which I undertook after retirement because family was involved. Yes, my faculties are still operational.
I hear Kimball and Lora have the flu unfortunately. Hopefully they soon recover.
Tamara is on her way to Nice, France to meet her childhood friend Adeena. I am sure the two of them will have fun together.
Nona tells me that her new position at Teck is becoming very interesting and is a fulfillment of her goals.
A recap of positive events over the last four days can be highlighted with the apparent completion of submissions to facilitate approval of the Hlookoff Subdivision. It is in the responsibility of the Lawyer’s Office to complete registration with Land Titles Office. I mention here because I essentially retired some six (6) years ago but I undertook this because of family involvement. Every subdivision has its share of challenges and this one was the same. I believe this will be number eleven (11). I enjoyed being involved again.
Tamara has arrived safely in Nice to join her friend Adeena. The texts and pictures are flowing so our family is included in their joyous occasion.
Nona completed her second week at Teck conducting Trail Leadership Development for front line leaders. The was tired but ecstatic. This is forward activity for Teck to capture cooperation in an effort to boost efficiency and thus profitability. The reaction of the twenty (20) participants rendered the planned effort a success.
When my children are happy that always brings a smile to my face.
Kimball’s oldest daughter decided to involve her father and partner in a Varenekee (Perogies in Ukrainian) today. There was a rush of calls to Aunty Nona and Baba to make sure the mixed the dough correctly before forming the end product. I was not invited to the feast and so I feel “dejected” in a way. So nice to see our grand children search out the cultural foods.
No one shoed up for the “Chemo” Coffee Club (people who are suffering from Cancer and those who are Survivors) session at A & W as I understand two of the members have encountered challenges in their treatments. We have a pact that those that can will attend and so I did.
I am getting excited as I work on the Visitation Spreadsheet for our planned trip to Saskatchewan starting March 31, 2025. It is unbelievable the number of people that are on our objective list. The challenge is to ensure I have their contact numbers so that I can check a few days in advance of their availability. At 84 years young, Marilyn and I don’t have the stamina and so we need to plan accordingly.
I enjoy curling and the Montanna / BKT Brier is very entertaining. The Canadian Teams are providing outstanding competition for each other. Every Game is worthy of observing.
The weather is starting to look like Spring. The snow has all melted in our yards at Grandview and there is no snow at all in downtown Castlegar.
I need to remember my appointment to take the car in for a total checkup and lubrication tomorrow.
Many positive events these past several days have taken place.
My Subdivision application has advanced with approval by the Regional District of Central Kootenay. Now the Approving Officer from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure needs confirm that the Preliminary Lot Approval can procedure to registration with Land Titles Office. It is always a difficult challenge with every subdivision, big or smal.
Marilyn had an Optometrist appointment on Monday. The diagnosis was not great with a Detached Retina. She was quickly sent to an Ophthalmologist who was able to fit her in and able to make repairs that same day. Good news after a shock.
I was able to get our 2010 Focus checked out for the long trip to Saskatchewan in April. Some of repairs were very timely and necessary. Travelling with confidence is always the best alternative.
My right ankle was experiencing Arthritic pains and prevented my walking regime. This morning I did the entire one (1) mile circuit, the three (3) laps which is my normal objective. Sometimes I do one if it is too inclement. Other times I am able to achieve two trips. So far no Arthritic repercussions which may be the result of following recommended diets and absence of alcohol. I drink a 1/2 lemon squeezed into a cup of water every day as this acidic addition to my diet somehow controls development of purines resulting in uric acid. Not sure how one acid controls another but at this point in my life, I am not really that curious.
The weather has warmed up with frost just overnight but temperatures during the day get up to +14 C.
I am still learning how this is entered on my blog so this item is my third attempt.
I did three (3) laps yesterday (3 miles) and it felt good. I wanted to do three this morning but my body disagreed so I did one.
I cheated yesterday and enjoyed a Papa Teenburger. Great, but the red meat triggered the Urea creation and I needed an extra Tylenol to control the pain. So “cheating” is not worth the pain.
The weather continues to welcome Spring. My garlic along the house is over 3 inches high. I decided to test the patience of my Vole residents in my 3′ deep by 50′ wide planter at the rear of my lot overlooking the Columbia River valley. I planted garlic coves in bunches about 18″ apart. I am told that Voles do not like Garlic so we will see what happens. I plan to plant onions, carrots, beets, radishes in the spaces. I accumulated another 8 pots which will add to the 8 that I already have and I will plant my tomatoes and peppers in those. Last year the Voles did not want to climb the sides of the pots. No I did not forget about the Deer and Elk which usually feed on my strawberry plants. Oh well we don’t rely on our gardens like when we grew up on the farm. The garden needed to be productive or the family would starve.
I decided to prompt the Approving Officer from the Ministry of Highways and Interstructure yesterday about final approval of the subdivision
The political morass that has inundated North American politics has repercussions in World economics as the stock market respond to the irrational behavior of a US President demonstrating what his professional psychologist niece, Mary Lea Trump, had diagnosed and predicted her uncle would do if he was elected as President. That never stopped the electorate to choose Donnie so that we it can be confirmed that he suffers mentally, either naturally or because of age.
I try to keep my distance but unfortunately there is a “skunk” to our Canadian back yard. Growing up and a farm, we were counselled get rid of them when they came to visit. I won’t elaborate on our methods because it was not always that easy. Usually the “after smell” lasted for weeks as it will be referred to in history BT (Before Trump) and AT (After Trump).
Being a senior with several handicaps has its benefits as our tax rebate this year will cover our travelling expenses to the Prairies this spring, That is better news than having to pay.
I am searching for onion bulbs to get into the ground so that we can enjoy green onions when we return from our holiday. I love green onions and radish. There are very few vegetables that I dislike and that is the reason we have a hobby garden.
Daughter Tamara returned from Nice to Vancouver and is recovering at her son’s place from upset stomach with food she consumed in Nice, She denies over indulgence of alcohol with her friend Adeena and a friend, Sasha from Siberia. I am sure she had a good time.
I am slowly confirming our itinerary for trip to coincide what will work for the people we want to visit and our ability to mutually accommodate. Marilyn and I are getting excited already, It will be nice to see all the people we have identified that we wish to visit. I am sure we will miss some which will be a mutual disappointment but we will do what we can in the time we are there.
I had my regular coffee meeting at A & W, Wednesday at 1000 hours. We had two acting Rotarians present with Ron Armbruster in the hospital. Some TLC and nothing serious. I enjoy the subject conversations because they are usually positive and very little health complaints which everyone has but it does not help to dwell upon them.
I have my Chemo Club coffee at 1400 hours today, again at A & W. Hopefully my friends are able to attend. The past two weeks, they were overcome with their treatments but the rule has been set: those that can should attend, I will.
Dukhobors’ history resonated with the small time volunteering I do in Grassroots Response in Waterloo. I saw a possible descendant of the family tree I saw on this blog. He lived with his Dad in Georgia in his childhood. Let me know if I may write more about this directly. I am not related, I only thought of adding another link to the tree.

I had a great day!

Hello,
Dukhobors’ history resonated with the small time volunteering I do in Grassroots Response in Waterloo. I saw a possible descendant of the family tree I saw on this blog. He lived with his Dad in Georgia in his childhood. Let me know if I may write more about this directly. I am not related, I only thought of adding another link to the tree.
Wish you well.
